Two numbers decide this purchase: what a registered agent costs this year, and what it costs every year after. Vendors advertise the first number and let you discover the second. Below, both numbers for nine services operating in Alabama.

Disclosure before rankings: Alabama Registered Agent.co built this list and sells the service holding first place. Our verdicts are a seller's verdicts, so discount them as you see fit. The prices are not ours to shade; each one is the vendor's own advertised rate.

The Ranking Method

Three questions, asked in order. Is the yearly rate published where a buyer can find it? Does it survive renewal intact? And what does it actually buy? Flat published prices that hold steady score high. Teaser rates, quarterly billing, and hidden renewals drag a service down the list.

Question one costs us the price crown, and we will not pretend otherwise. At a published $90, BetterLegal is the cheapest registered agent service in Alabama by sticker, and our $99 does not beat it. What our number does is hold: it lands among the lowest flat annual prices in Alabama, renews without ever moving, and includes same-day scanning of service of process, which no sticker shows.

The Verdicts, Top to Bottom

1. Alabama Registered Agent.co: $99, flat, every year. Our row, our service, and the disclosure above applies to every word of this entry. The facts are short. You pay $99 a year, and the renewal invoice reads $99 for as long as you keep the service. Service of process gets scanned and emailed the same business day it lands at our office. The one add-on charge that exists, $15 per item for scanning non-legal mail, sits on our pricing page instead of surfacing on a statement. No upgrade screen interrupts checkout, and the address on your state record is a real Alabama street address instead of yours.

2. Northwest Registered Agent: $125 a year. The competitor we respect. Northwest states its structure plainly: free the first year when bundled with formation, then $125 annually for 1-4 states, dropping to $100 per state at five or more. Humans answer their support line, and the privacy stance is genuine rather than decorative. Against us they lose on exactly one line, the renewal price.

3. BetterLegal: $90 a year. Holder of the lowest published rate here, ranked high because the number is real. What went unverified is the first-year arrangement, so confirm the initial charge at their checkout rather than assuming it matches the renewal. If sticker price settles your decision, this is your answer, not us.

4. Rocket Lawyer: $125 a year. One price across every membership tier and no first-year discount found, meaning the figure you see is the figure you keep paying. Fair enough. The agent product is a fraction of a sprawling legal platform, worth it when you want the whole platform, dead weight when you want an agent and nothing else.

5. ZenBusiness: $199 a year at renewal. The software is the best in this group and we will not pretend otherwise. The structure is the problem: $99 plus state fees buys the first standalone year, then the renewal arrives at $199. The advertised number recruits you; the renewal number keeps you. Make the decision at $199 or do not make it.

6. Bizee (formerly Incfile): $149 a year standalone. Free agent service rides along with Bizee's formation packages for 3 to 12 months, package-dependent, and free months are free months. Then $149 a year starts. Mark the day the bundle lapses; that is the day the billing begins.

7. LegalZoom: $249 a year. The most recognized name in the business, priced like it knows that: $249 flat, auto-renewing, no first-year discount found, the top flat rate in the table. Everything ranked above it costs less per year. What the difference buys is the name.

8. Swyft Filings: $149 a quarter. Quarterly billing is the tell. $149 every three months compounds to roughly $596 a year, the most expensive effective rate in this comparison, with no distinct first-year discount found. A price that needs multiplication before it can be compared is a price built to avoid comparison. It ranks accordingly.

9. Inc Authority: renewal not published. Free first year, $0 on the invoice, then a renewal the company does not print anywhere: FAQ, package pages, and homepage all come up empty. Whatever that number turns out to be, you learn it at checkout or on a phone call, after the free year has done its job. That pattern earns last place on principle.

Switching Costs $100 in Alabama, So Pick Once

Most states let you walk away from a bad agent for pocket change. Alabama does not. The statement of change filed under Ala. Code § 10A-1-5.32, on the state's Change of Registered Agent or Registered Office by Entity form, carries a $100 fee at the Secretary of State's Business Services Division. That fee rewrites the math on every teaser price above: escape a renewal jump and Alabama charges you $100 for the privilege. The cheapest mistake is the one you never make, which is an argument for flat published pricing before it is an argument for us specifically.

Alabama's Rules for Who Can Be Your Agent

Ala. Code § 10A-1-5.31 sets the requirements:

  • An individual living in Alabama, or an entity (in-state or out-of-state) registered to transact business in Alabama
  • A business office kept at the same address as the registered office
  • A street address where a process server can reach a person during business hours
  • Not a bare mailbox service or telephone answering service standing in for a real office
  • No PO boxes, per the Secretary of State's forms

All nine vendors above satisfy the statute. It filters nobody off this list, which is why the prices and the document handling have to do the sorting.

No Annual Report Here. Something Else Instead

Alabama abolished the Secretary of State annual report: corporations lost theirs to Act 2024-213 effective October 1, 2024, and LLCs never had one to lose. What remains is the Business Privilege Tax, a Department of Revenue filing, and since tax year 2024 an entity that calculates $100 or less in tax owes nothing and files nothing. Read vendor add-ons with that in mind. An annual report service sold for Alabama describes a filing that no longer exists. Compliance help that matters here means tracking the Business Privilege Tax deadline, which our reminders cover inside the $99.

Make the Call

The table holds everything you need. If flat pricing, an unmoving renewal, and same-day scanning are the answer, enrollment takes minutes.
